This past week I published my first children’s book, It’s Just a Little Rain. The story is about a real dream I had as a young adult during a challenging time in my life. In the dream, I was waiting at a bus stop during a downpour of rain. A mother duck waddled next to me and started talking to me. In the dream, I thought I was losing my mind that a duck was speaking to me. She shared her wisdom and encouragement. Then she got on the bus, and I walked home in the rain. It’s Just a Little Rain is a metaphor for all those times when we need to remember that listening to our inner voice can get us through almost anything life throws at us. Resilience is the word that comes to mind when thinking about our inner voice. There are a few insights from this story to inspire resiliency for all of us.
Three Insights to Inspire Resiliency
There are three phrases from the mother duck’s wisdom that stay with me to this day: “It’s just a little rain. Let the water slide off your back. It’s OK to get wet.”
Here are three insights from the duck’s wisdom to inspire resiliency as we face the new year’s challenges.
- Perspective – “It’s just a little rain.” Keep life in perspective, especially during the experiences that weigh us down, or times of worry, and the painful moments. Trust you can get through the hard things in life. You are stronger than you know when it comes to dealing with the challenges.
- Flexibility – “Let the water slide off your back.” Change happens. The unexpected happens. The good, the bad, the ugly happens. Be flexible and pliable with all life experiences. You are strong enough to learn and grow through them.
- Courage – “It’s OK to get wet.” Permit yourself to be fully engaged in life; all of it. Jump in wholeheartedly. Rolling with the changes of life will help craft us into our authentic becoming. We are stronger and more courageous than we recognize.
A Book and A Song
I clearly remember the dream even though I did not write in my journal about it. Soon after I had the dream, I wrote a song about the experience. I recently found my initial drafts of the songwriting notes from 33 years ago.
Fast forward to the current time. In addition to publishing the book, I also published a single, It’s Just a Little Rain, now available on most music streaming services.
Wisdom to Inspire Resiliency
Change is inevitable. Keep life in perspective. Fully engage in life anyway.
You need your true self to go through life being fully engaged, with perspective and know you are OK no matter what.
We are stronger than we know. Embrace the rain.
We are strong enough to learn and grow. Let the water slide off our backs.
We are more courageous than we recognize. It is OK to get wet. Our genuine self remains at our core.
Summary
Our strength is in our resiliency, our perspective, flexibility, and courage. As we face the adventure of 2021, we will still be managing the pandemic and everything else that the new year holds.
We can do this. We have done hard things before, and we can forge ahead through the challenges, setbacks, detours, and off-roading that we experience in life.
Resiliency is our strength.
