I am in the midst of reading, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future by Daniel H. Pink, and I really resonated with the following section on the paradox of prosperity and the pursuit of purpose and meaning. Making Impact – Ask Yourself This One Question Throughout Your Day
How am I making an impact today?
My summer vacation this year was in Yellowstone National Park, one of my favorite places in the lower 48. I have been to the park three times. Each time, I discover something new and take in a fresh set of wonder. This time was the Grand Prismatic Spring which stands out in beauty, clearly identifiable as a unique geyser in the park. Its color, its exquisiteness, and its stunning contrast against the sky captivate me in amazement and inspiration.
How do we stand out? Not so much for ourselves but for others?
What impact can we make for others?
Can others clearly identify us as people making a difference – just today?
Do Not Doubt The Power of Your Good
Do Not Doubt The Power of Your Good
The power of your good. Sometimes we go through life unaware of how much we make a difference in people’s lives. Or other times, we may question ourselves if we are making a dent at all in making the world a better place. Yet, it is in the small things that can truly make an impact. Many times, tiny acts often go unnoticed. The power of goodness is strong no matter the size of the action.
Listening. Assistance. Opportunity. Challenge.
Some experiences I have recently encountered:
- Taking time to listen and to experience a soulful conversation with a friend – leaving the encounter feeling energized and inspired
- Stopping to help someone with directions to find their way back home
- Giving an employee a chance to learn and grow, and the employee responds by thriving with excellence
- Challenging authority in a constructive manner resulting in a positive change for the empowerment of children
Soulfulness. Kindness. Transformation. Persistence.
What are some examples of the power of your goodness?
Let these experiences remind you to trust the work of your good is making difference whether you see it or not. Do not doubt. Period.
A note about the photo – This butterfly hung out one afternoon this summer at our camp site. The butterfly is a significant reminder of my brother’s encouraging presence. My brother, Tom, died of cancer four years ago. I seem to encounter butterflies when I most need the encouragement, whether I am mindful or not of this inner need.
Making our Mark on the World – We Leave the Footprint of Us in our Creative Work
Our Creative Work
Over a summer weekend in one of the coastal towns of western Washington, I spent some time walking the streets, window shopping, and perusing through several shops that featured the creative work, crafts, and handmade goods of local artists. One shop that caught my attention was a knitting store. In the store, there were piles of yarn everywhere along with various supplies for knitters and weavers.
I have a great appreciation for those who can weave, knit, or crochet. This type of art is way out of my creative league. In the shop, I noticed the equisiteness of the yarn, a bundle of a long, single strand, something so colorful that its design and creativity morph into a wearable work of beauty. I love this about the creative process, in that art expands across all areas of life. The opportunity for beauty and creativity is boundless.
Our works of art through paintings, crafts, writing, cooking, photography, dance, or whatever means of expression of artistry are ways we leave a creative legacy for others. We all leave a part of ourselves in the creative work we do. Just this day, we have the opportunity to leave our mark on the world. Let us stamp our footprint with meaningful creativity.
What impact will you make in the work that you do?
What creative footprint will you leave behind that speaks of beauty and inspiration?
Seek and Practice Galactic Goodness in the World
Galactic Goodness in the World
On my way to work this past week, I stopped by the lake in my neighborhood to ponder the beauty of the landscape before me. This pause-by-the-lake time has become a morning routine of meditation. On this particular day, I noticed two ducks swimming and gandering about the shore. Two small ducks and their graceful entry into the water made a significant ripple effect on the waters of the lake. Galactic goodness in two small ducks. [Read more…] about Seek and Practice Galactic Goodness in the World
