What career advice would I give to my younger self?
To my younger self,
You may be thinking about college and what to do with your life beyond high school. I am glad that you are planning to further your education. Education is a ticket to a fulfilling life. Remember to not put too much pressure on yourself. You don’t have to have it all figured out by the time you are 18 or 25 or even 30.
Career Advice
Keep the goal right in front of you. Finish high school; determine what college you want to attend. Go there and do it. Get a degree, period. It doesn’t matter what kind of degree – determine a major and finish it – all the way through. The degree is only a stepping stone in your career. You will do much more than what is on a piece of paper.
Remember that your education will not end when your formal education concludes. Learning is lifelong, so keep reading, writing, and growing.
Network
It is a combination of several things that will advance your career: your education, your work experience, and your network. Remember to network with people along the way and keep a list of your contacts. Your connections with professional colleagues will take you further than any degree.
Make sure you find jobs and keep working throughout your education. Get as many different and diverse employment as much as possible. Work with people — experience customers. Your work experience will carry you a long way.
Communication
The most important skill to learn? Communication. Develop those communication skills, including verbal and written. There is always an opportunity to get better in this area. No matter what job you have or career you choose, communication will continuously play a vital role – not only in your professional career but also in your relationships.
Curiosity and Writing Strengths
And that journal you started? Keep writing. Keep going with the note-taking and making observations about life. Continue building your lists and tracking your progress on your quest to get better to be your best self. Your zest for life is what makes you unique. Keep developing your core strength.
A curious mindset is your superpower. Continue to deepen your curiosity of life. See the world. Travel as much and as often as you can.
You are a strong woman, much stronger than you think. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.
Success in the Process
Know you have what it takes within you right now to be successful. Remember that success will include a lot of failures and setbacks. Don’t beat yourself up over this. See each failure as an opportunity to learn and then grow from that lesson. Getting better and living toward your best self is a process, a lifelong process.
Most of all, I believe in you and have faith in you always.
Love,
