Meaningful work. I’m not talking only about your day job or side hustle. In this context, I am thinking of work in the broader sense and includes the personal work on your self, your well-being, your relationships, all of who you are.

I wasn’t expecting to discover some fundamental ideas about meaningful work when I read Penn’s book. My initial intent was to seek ways to be a better writer. The text is full of practical and useful coaching tips on writing and ways to make a living as an author. What stood out for me are several key concepts and questions about seeking a meaningful life no matter what you do.
10 Principles for Finding Meaningful Work
1. Desire – What do you want to do with your life? (p. 3)
2. Priority – What is important to you? (p. 12)
3. Results – How are you going to measure the success of what’s important to you? In other words, what does success look like for you? (p.12)
4. Seeking – Trust your curiosity. (p. 17)
5. Remembering – Write everything down. (p.17)
6. Value – Create value from your ideas. (p.7)
7. Empowerment – Stop asking permission. (p. 44)
8. Self-confidence – You don’t need permission to be who you are. (p.44)
9. Action – Stop waiting to be chosen; choose yourself. (p.44)
10. Growth – Keep learning all the time. Experiment. Take risks. Learn from failure. Keep going. (p. 22)
I want to give more thought to the principles listed above. The straightforward concepts cause me to reflect more deeply on how I am seeking meaning in my life.
Meaningful work is an ongoing journey throughout our lives.
