Off-grid. Where do you go to be offline? Have you spent some time in analog mode, meaning time away from the digital world? What is your experience of being unplugged from all electronic devices?
There is nothing wrong with electronics, mobile devices, or digital products. These innovations can be great tools for communications. There is something to be said about spending time disconnected from the digital world.
Nearly all my work is through electronic devices and software. Don’t get me wrong. I love my job and enjoy working with software and virtual technology. Too much work in the digital framework can be a little taxing on the creative mind.
3 Guidelines for Going Off-Grid
1. Know your why. Understand why you need to go offline for a while. Give your mind a break. Vary your routine or do something different to evoke change and re-energize your mindset. Why do you want to go off-grid?
2. Know your analog tools. What helps you re-set and refresh? To go off-grid is to do something by hand such as knitting, playing a musical instrument, going for a hike, taking a walk through a park, gardening, or working in the yard. Do things by hand, spend time outdoors, or be in a quiet place with nothing electronic to distract you from paying attention. What helps you step away from the digital noise that can be overwhelming sometimes? How do you get redirected back to being centered and focused again?
3. Know the time to you need. How much time do you need to nourish your inner spirit? Time could be a day or half day outdoors, a few hours during a quiet evening, a quiet moment of stillness in the morning. Do you need time being by yourself or time doing something with others such as playing cards or board games?
Spending time in analog mode can be a positive change now and then. The off-grid moments allow you to quiet the chatter inside your head and listen with greater intention to the world within you and around you.
Where do you go to savor being offline for a while?
