Maybe the fast pace of summer this time of year is that school will be starting soon. Maybe the rapid tempo of life right now is that summer will soon be shifting to autumn. There’s a change coming soon. Whatever the reason, the swirl of activity has been intense for me this past week. Life seems to be driving at break-neck speed.
Have you ever had one of those weeks where there is so much going on that your head is spinning? Where you can’t seem to find a moment to breathe? I have had one of those weeks.
If only for a moment this day, where do you go to find moments of stillness?
Stillness
Stillness is defined as the absence of motion. I especially think of stillness as the absence of motion of our minds, the absence of motion of our thoughts, our to-do list, our worry, our stress.
- Silence
- Calm
- Hush
- Peace
- Quiet
- Tranquility
Stillness is that moment of pause, that time to catch your breath, to ground yourself, calm your mind, and breathe your self back to center.
There are two routes out of my neighborhood. Nearly every morning when I leave the house, I drive in the direction that takes me past a small lake, more of a large pond. And nearly every morning, I make a point to pull over and stop, to make an intentional pause, a gaze upon the waters, and to breathe deeply of wonder. The stop is normally less than five minutes, just enough to breathe in the quiet, a little fuel for the soul this day.
What helps you dwell in stillness?
Where do you go to find moments of quiet? To lull your being back to center?
I welcome your comments.
