Do you resonate with any of these questions to help you get in touch with the ache of your longing?
- Do you sometimes find yourself wandering through the day feeling scattered and disconnected?
- Are there moments where you feel like you are just going through the motions in your daily living?
- Do you ever find yourself longing for a deeper connection with others? With your work? With your purpose?
- Do you sometimes experience stress by being busy all the time?
- Does time ever seem to feel rushed? Like you are moving at break-neck speed from one task to the other, and the jet wash is a tailwind of chaos, an exhaust of endless fumes of disruption? Where life seems to be moving so quickly you long to stop and catch your breath for a moment?
- Do you find yourself longing for more? Where you want more in life? Where you believe there is something more to living?
Stillness
No matter the question, at your deepest inner self, a voice whispers, “Enough. Enough of the chaos. Let go and be still in the quiet.”
What do you want for your life?
I wish I could tell you that there is a secret formula that can turn off the overdrive in your brain. I wish there were an easy, quick-fix solution that can help you slow down and be the most consistent, productive, stress-free, high-octane energetic person living the life you desire.
How I wish there were a digital application that can help you sustain that near-perfect life we all strive to become.
Based on my experience, that wishing is just that – wishful thinking. Sorry, the bad news is that the quest for perfection, that search for an automatic switch that rapidly changes us and produces instant results of success is a myth. It is bullshit. It is an elusive treasure hunt, like gold at the end of a rainbow, that we are forever chasing.
What is at the ache of your longing?
The reality is that the ache of our longing for what we truly want in life is with us throughout our lives, driving us forward to that life of significance. Our inner drive and outward actions toward becoming our best self is a journey. This life adventure is a marathon, not a sprint. It is a constant discipline of work toward becoming and not yet fully arriving.
The commitment and path to personal growth is never a direct line of upward progress. The walkabout is more a spinning, swirling, hilly, up and down, forwards, backward, somersaulting, dips, and bounces in the mess of life. The process is arduous sometimes, and also involves moments of breakthrough, insights, fun, “aha” moments of yes, and the full spectrum of emotions.
Being aware of the desire of our heart and acting on the commitment to live our lives with purpose opens our world to being fully alive in the simple ordinary act of living life with intention. The adventure begins by crossing the threshold of stillness and reflecting on that which is at the core of who we are. Dwell in the place of your heart’s desire as often as you can.
What are the questions you ask for self-reflection? What is at the ache of your longing?
