Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by a task or job you have to do that you feel paralyzed by the sheer volume of it? Have you ever felt lost in “what to do next?” Or your mind keeps racing and you feel like you are running in circles? This mind swirl often happens in transition moments or times of chaos and stress, and what adult hasn’t experienced that in life? What helps you focus on the work right in front of you?
We recently bought a house and have begun the arduous process of sorting, pitching, and packing. There is a sense of urgency in the process, and there have been a few moments where I have experienced “analysis by paralysis.” At times I feel overwhelmed by the daunting task before me that I become paralyzed, and my work stops. My family reminds me to slow down amid the overwhelming thought and pack what you see in front of you. One box at a time is the mantra in the house. Persevere in the packing.
Focus on the work right in front of you
When you experience moments of frustration or are feeling overwhelmed about what to do next, remember to focus on the work right in front of you. Like moving, take action with the things before you. Whatever that next thing is, this is your box to pack, to face. Then take the next step you need to do, one actionable box at a time.
Progress happens in the small actions that stack up over time, leading to a successful outcome. The trick is to keep doing the work. Trust this is where you need to be and face the challenge head-on. Persevere with the task you are facing in life right now. The persistence will pay off with results.
