In what ways do we find the fingerprints of God in our corner of the world today? How are we seeking God in everyday life? How do we slow down and pause long enough to pay attention? What are the ways we listen to the sound of the Spirit at the level of our souls?
God is the partner of your most intimate soliloquies.
Viktor Frankl, “The Unheard Cry for Meaning”
A Spirituality of Sensuality
A spirituality of sensuality is experiencing God through our senses, one way of relating to God, no matter how we name our Higher Power.
For example, be mindful of your breathing, even if it is just a moment to catch your breath. Notice your surroundings and seek to pay closer attention. Try using your rational side of the brain (the logic to fix something) and then the emotional side of your mind (feelings of awe, wonder, grief, sadness, gratitude, joy, happiness). Then listen with your heart or your gut. How does your body respond to the sounds, sights, and smells of the holy?
Seeking God in Everyday Life
During this month of sheltering in place, I have been mindful of God throughout the mundane of home living and working.
What is the aroma of God? For me, God was the smell of yeast in the rising dough and the aroma of freshly baked bread.
God tasted like a vintage Italian wine, a 2007 Brunello from the Montalcino region of Italy.
The sight of God was like a sunset over the mountains of Puget Sound, glowing in deep oranges and light blue tints across the skies.
I noticed the touch of the beauty of God in the blooming tulips around the yard.
God sounded like the stillness of the cats, soaking in the solitude of the sun’s rays.
Throughout the day, like the cats, God is hanging out with me amid work and worry, and in moments of pausing and landing deeper into gratitude. Experiencing God in the holy ordinary is pretty, freakin’, refreshing, and soulful.
Your Turn
To repeat the words of Viktor Frankl, take time to seek “the partner of your most intimate soliloquies.” Seek God in everyday life – in the small things, the natural stuff, the uneventful stuff, the mundane things.
Love is resonating with the fiber of every living thing on earth. Slow down to the speed of your soul to notice.
Your thoughts? How are you seeking God in everyday life? What works for you?
I welcome your comments.
