When you think about the economy, think for a moment from a spiritual perspective rather than a financial one. Similarly, what would a spiritual economy of generosity look like for you?
A Spiritual Economy of Generosity
Here are some ways to give and serve in generosity without spending money.
Give others:
- Time
- Inclusion – include others in your conversations and community experiences
- Respect
- Kindness
- A listening heart
- Affirmations
- Positive feedback
- A safe environment that invites others to be vulnerable enough for authenticity
- Understanding
- The assumption of positive intention
- Positive energy
- Notice and engagement instead of ignoring them
- Compassion
- A sense of welcome and hospitality
- Permission to be fully themselves without judgment.
A Conversation With Practical Wisdom
I was at dinner the other night with a dear friend, and our conversation focused on ways we can be generous to others that do not cost money. Incidentally, my friend added to above list and offered two practical suggestions of generosity.
- Write a letter to a friend or family member you haven’t connected with in a long time.
- Invite a friend, neighbor, or family member to have a conversation. As
k them to list three things that cause the person to be disheartened in the world. Then ask the person to choose one to work through to help better the world.
I liked my friend’s suggestions. I asked her what three things dishearten her about the world. And which one she would choose to work on to make the world a better place. She mentioned these three:
- Sexism in the workplace
- Inequity and disparity of income between generations
- Lack of morality and social norms have changed what is upright and integral to what is kind and
loving in the world.
Of the three, she mentioned she would work on the first, sexism in the workplace to bring about a better world. Her main action would be to highlight the problem in a way that can generate healthy dialogue that promotes change. In addition, we both mentioned that there are still some work environments in 2020 where sexism is so ingrained in the culture that no amount of healthy dialogue will generate change. Nonetheless, she said she was committed to continue raising awareness and modeling an inclusive environment.
Your Turn
Finally, what would a spiritual economy of generosity look like for you? What are some ways that spur your service to others?
I welcome your ideas and suggestions.
