Keep Stretching Toward Kindness
I keep going back to the NPR interview last week with Julia Roberts and her exhortation to reach out a little more toward kindness.
“There’s so many little gentle moments in the day to express kindness to one another. And it’s just taking the time and being reminded to do that.” – Julia Roberts, NPR Interview with Lulu Garcia-Navarro (November 12, 2017)
During Thanksgiving week, I have been traveling for a holiday to visit with family. Both legs of the flight during the plane ride home are filled primarily with children under 10 and adults over 70. There are a lot of opportunities for random and intentional acts of kindness.
On one leg of the flight, I was particularly touched by the gentleman across from me. A senior woman sat in the middle seat next to him. This guy went out of his way to talk with her and reassure her throughout the flight. From what I could tell from his conversation and from showing her photos of his military experience, he was an experienced pilot. He had an app on his laptop that showed her the tracking of our flight across the country. I was touched by his generosity of his time and space to answer all her questions throughout a three-hour flight. He was a source of inspiration for reaching out a little further with kindness.
This Thanksgiving week, may our acts of kindness be steeped in gratitude.
