What is your favorite method for doing nothing? How do you do nothing with intention?
Stillness
Sometimes we need to be, alone with our thoughts, without an agenda, and be for while to re-energize our spirit. There are times when we need to stop and do nothing to refuel our purpose, energy, or productivity.
To do nothing with intention means setting a mindset of awareness ahead of time. Then, when you engage in that period of letting go, in the stillness, in the doing nothing, be aware of how you experience this time through your senses, your emotions, your entire being.
When you don’t know what to do, do nothing. Get quiet so you can hear the still small voice – your inner GPS guiding you to true North. – Oprah Winfrey
Ready
Before the activity of doing nothing happens, it is essential that you set your intention about why you are doing nothing, and also block time on your calendar to make it happen. Give the activity a fence, boundaries around the time, that has a definite start and finish.
I set calendar appointments for myself. However, I don’t put, “Do Nothing” on the subject line. I label this time as PREP – Purposeful Rest, Energy or Productivity. The acronym is a reminder for me to go into this block of time with a clear intention of why I am doing nothing and what is my desired outcome.
Do Nothing
Here are a few ideas:
- Spend time being still and quiet while focusing on your breathing
- Listen to instrumental or reflective music
- Sit by a lake or in a park and pay attention to nature and creation that make their home there
- Have a cup of tea in a downtown coffee shop and sit and watch people
- Work a puzzle with family or friends
My favorite activity of doing nothing is to sit still in a chair at home long enough to let the cats hang out with me on my lap or the armchair. They are some of my best teachers on the art of doing nothing.
The point is this: doing nothing can be soulful and nourishing. Your mindset and intention going into the activity makes a difference.
With Intention
Be intentional with your life in all aspects. Intentionality is what you can control in life. Your mindset, your attitude, your focus, your intention can add to your inner strength and courage.
How are you paying attention in the moment of inactivity? What is your heart telling you?
Do nothing on purpose.
