In what ways do you anchor your spirituality? What are some universal principles that form the base of how you grow spiritually in life?
Spiritual Growth
Spirituality is one of the elements of our personal development as human beings. What helps you foster your spiritual growth?
There are core principles that underlie our work in developing our spirituality. These principles are more of an attitude or mindset in our approach to growth. They help widen the landscape of our hearts and deepen our inner spiritual readiness.
Anchor Your Spirituality in These 5 Principles
Here are five principles to anchor your spirituality during any stage of your spiritual journey.
- Openness/Receptivity – Be open to the Spirit or Higher Power in all corners of the world and within all the crevices of your inner space. Have an open mindset and be receptive to growth and a willingness to go deeper.
- Engagement – Be willing to engage with your Spirit or Higher Power. Spirituality is a relationship of consistent interaction.
- Awareness – Pay attention to life happening before you and within you. Take notice and reflect that back in some way, through journaling, art, creative expression, storytelling, or some form of writing even if it is list-making.
- Commitment – Dedicate your time, whatever the amount you need, to foster your spiritual growth. Commitment needs ongoing reflection, renewal, and action.
- Generosity – Be readily gracious in helping others and sharing the gifts of your spirituality (e.g., unconditional love, gratitude, goodness, compassion, understanding, etc.)
Growth Happens Despite our Expectations
Sometimes there will be struggles in the spiritual journey. Usually, growth happens less in a linear fashion and more in circular movements.
When there are moments of difficulty or times when you feel stuck in your spiritual growth, go back to these principles and spend some time reflecting on what may be holding you back or keeping you off-center.
In Times of Struggle, Reflect on These Questions
Here are five sets of questions to help get you back to center and keep you grounded in the spiritual life.
- Openness/Receptivity – Is there any area of my life that I do not bring to my spirituality? Is there anything blocking me from receiving the gifts of the Spirit? (e.g., gratitude, wisdom, insights toward change and action, etc.) What am I missing or ignoring?
- Awareness – Where am I distracted in life and not paying attention? Where do I need to slow down? Are there any habits I need to change?
- Engagement – Where am I hindered in my actions? Is there anything keeping me from leaning inward and forward in my spiritual growth? What is preventing me from transformation?
- Commitment – What is blocking my dedication in nurturing and growing in my spiritual journey? Is there anyone or anything getting in the way? Where are the opportunities for change?
- Generosity – How is my energy level in serving others and sharing my gifts? Is there anything causing fatigue or draining my energy? What do I need to do for my ongoing self-care and renewal?
