Learning Mindset and Wisdom
Over the holidays I spent some time with my Mom and family. My Mom had saved a couple of articles for me from Good Housekeeping Magazine, an outcome of her learning mindset. She thought I would find them interesting and inspiring, which I did.
Before I tell you about the two articles she saved for me, I first need to tell you about my Mom who is currently 91 years of age. She continues to have and share her learning mindset. She has had this mentality and approach to learning all her life. My Mom is always reading, from a novel and books to newspapers and magazines, seeking information to deepen her questions and to help her stay current as much as possible. My Mom is a great example that you are never too old to stop learning and growing. Learning/growth mindset is a lifelong ethos to nurture throughout your life.
Insights from the Two Articles
The first article is on Joy Mangano, the inventor of the self-wringing Miracle Mop. She is an entrepreneur billionaire who empowers others through her support and involvement with the nonprofit, Rising Tide, and the Start Something Challenge. She also lives by her key rule in life: never stop caring for others. In the article, Joy also provides some tips for entrepreneurs, more like practical tips for everyday living:
- Treat everything like product
- If it doesn’t work, fix it
- Don’t wait to act
- Move quickly on an idea
- Never take no for an answer
- No gives you more options to turn something into a “yes”
- Take one step at a time
- Focus on the next step to help you move forward
- Be yourself
- Be true to who you are whether at work or at home
The second article is on Satya and Anu Nadella. Satya is the CEO of Microsoft. Full disclosure, I work for Microsoft, and I deeply respect Satya not only as my boss but as my hero and advocate for growth mindset in the workplace. The insights from Satya and Anu in this article:
- Humans have a unique quality called empathy
- Technology is nothing without the soft touch of humanity
- Amplify people’s strengths
- Wish that all feel empowered to create our own change at home and at work, one empathic step at a time
- Look for opportunities to refresh
My Mom knows me well. I found both articles heartening and inspiring. My Mom also liked both these articles because, for her, both Joy Mangano and Satya and Anu Nadella not only seem to be really good people who do great things for others, but also seem genuine and real. These are down-to-earth-kind-of-people, folks that would be welcome around our kitchen table for a conversation or a card game. I agree with my Mother’s insights, and she has a great perspective on people. I hope that I continue to have an open mind and learning mindset like her, no matter what age I live.
