The Agile PMO: Leading the Effective, Value Driven, Project Management Office (Business Agile Leadership) (Volume 1) by Michael Nir
I work in risk management and am on a couple of PMO (Project Management Office) teams. Sometimes it is a challenge to show the value of your work as a project manager. I found this book to be a useful, best practice guide for project management tools and teams, regardless of your industry. The author does a great job of driving home the key message, with relentless persistence, about value driven results in project management.
A few takeaways:
- Project management is not about administrative work (overhead) but about delivering results that drive value for your company
- Don’t get distracted by the shiny tools and templates for project management work (and there are a lot of cool tools out there; it’s ok to use them, just remember what they are – tools)
- Focus more on project results and less on project management templates, reports, forms admin work or other tools
- Focus on results that will drive value for the company’s strategy and/or increase the company’s ROI (Return on Investment)
- Agile is your friend – Leverage it to drive impact (Agile is a project management methodology that divides tasks into short cycles of work called sprints, and is an iterative process of reassessment and adaptation of project plans among cross-functional teams)
- Stay focused on the right projects to drive value
- Don’t let the project management process get in the way of delivering successful results that land impact to your organization
- Impact delivers value (and vice versa)
- Remember, it’s all about value, value, value!
