There is so much information, possibility, and opportunity right now around personal development and self-improvement that it may be challenging to find a starting point. Sometimes we want to improve our personal growth, but we do not know where to begin. We may say to ourselves, “I want to improve my life, but where do I start?” One way to begin is to start at the ground – growth at the base, the core of our inner being.
Growth at the Base – The Meaning of Ground
Consolations: The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday Words by David Whyte.
In his book, David Whyte calls the ground the “place where we already stand… it is what holds and supports us…what challenges us… to face the truth.” The foundation is to begin to have that “courageous conversation” with ourselves and embrace who we fully are. This ground is “a place on which to stand and a place from which to step.” (David Whyte, Consolations, p. 93-94)
Growth at the Base – The Root of Authenticity
What helps us stay rooted at our base? The core of our being? What is our driving element? For some, it may be gratitude, God, religion, courage, confidence, determination, spirituality, love, positivity, goodness, etc. With others, it may be a combination of these motivating factors. For me, the driving force is spirituality, the ever-moving energy of love that propels my life in the direction toward a more profound unconditional love, gratitude, and service for all.
What is it for you? What helps you stay rooted and spurs your growth at the base of who you are? In what ways does this genuine inner core give you the grit, the spirit, and inspiration to live and step forward as your most authentic self?
It’s All About that Base
Our ground, the growth at the base, is
- Where we are home with ourselves, our most authentic self
- Where we face our truth and own our shit – and still love ourselves anyway
- When our genuine person is the core of who we are
- The place where we emerge to step up to the plate of the world as our best self.
Your Turn
Reflect for a moment on what drives you internally. What motivates you? Where and in what experiences of your life have you been or are being your best self? What helps you live that experience, that moment of being your best?
What is your growth at the base? The driving force of gravity that keeps you grounded in your authenticity?
