During the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday this year, I spent some time reflecting on peace, courage over fear, and how I am intentional about my mindset. Below are a few insights from my reflection throughout the day.
Courage Over Fear
One, I began the day by reading Sara Blakely’s Instagram post on the quote she shared:
Courage is the power of the mind to overcome fear.

I appreciate how Blakely describes herself as a lifelong student of courage, and the only way to cultivate courage is to take action in life.
The Challenge of Peace
Two, I read through Andy Smallman’s newsletter, the weekly “Inspiration from Kind Living.” In the publication, he shares the MLK 40 Days of Peace Challenge.
There are two simple concepts in this challenge: befriend the other and love one another. Plus, the key themes celebrated in this challenge are peace, love, unity, and diversity.
We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.

Steadfast Community
Third, I visited the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) to see the Mont-Saint-Michel Model exhibit. It was sponsored by Microsoft, which offered a HoloLens experience along with the 2D model of the monument.
The 2D model was just as impressive as the 3D version. I was impressed with the fact that this monument still stands despite all the wars over the past several hundred years, and most recently, surviving the D-Day Invasion of Normandy during WWII (June 6, 1944).
I took some notes during my visit of the exhibit:
- A church, a village, a fortress
- History is always a bridge between the past, the present, and the future
- Mapping technology tells the story of humanity
- Respect for borders to enable borders of perspective
- Courage over fear – lasting peace of a steadfast community
Living in Harmony
The inner reflection got me thinking with a deeper focus on how we can learn from the courage and live in peace; and how we can model genuine compassion for the world in the way we treat others and ourselves through our thoughts, words, and deeds.
Change and action flow from our intentions. We must align our mindset with our hearts for our actions and service to sync in harmony. (Harmony means to hold the tension “just right.”)
Prayer of Intention for the Day
I breathe deeply of peace. Help me to listen and act this day with a heart of compassion and understanding. Help me serve from a place of love and relentless courage. Amen.
We have before us the glorious opportunity to inject a new dimension of love into the veins of our civilization.
