Quiet and Intention – Seeking to Understand
This past week at work during a team all-hands meeting, we had a guest speaker talk about diversity and inclusion. During one exercise we partnered with one other person we did not know or did not share similar work. Each person had two minutes to share one to two things about one’s life and culture. The other person was to listen and not ask questions until the end, two minutes of attentive listening without speaking. The experience was a profound moment of listening, truly listening to the other that allowed for a connection to happen in that brief moment of encounter. Two minutes of quiet, an awareness of the other, seeking to understand who this person is before you, a refreshing reminder of the power of quiet and intention.
Like life, seeking to understand is a verb in action, propelling us forward to something more, something deeper, something richer, something more soulful. Find time to be quiet for a moment to be fully present listening to another person. Seek to understand who is before you. What will you discover?
